Graceland

To get into Graceland, it is necessary to line up and take a ride in a van that takes you all the way across a road (Elvis Presley Boulevard) and up the drive. I guess Elvis never walked anywhere - why should his guests?

Expectations colour perception. I had thought Graceland would be as big as Versailles, but it wasn't. It was just a rather grand 1930's home with some additions and extensions. I wasn't disappointed by the interior decoration though. Cutting edge 1970's with shag pile ceilings and unparalleled gaudiness. A full-time party house.

Outside, in the Meditation Garden, we were startled to see the name Dean Nichopoulos under the eternal flame. Further research revealed that that Dean was Elvis's valet and the son of Elvis's doctor, the famous Dr Nick. The good doctor has a new book coming out soon. You can order their long-awaited story here.
