Day 11. Las Vegas to Lake Isabella, CA. Death Valley.

A long drive through the beautiful desolation of Death Valley. It got pretty hot (106 degF) when we dropped to nearly 200 feet below sea level and the colors of the desert kept changing as we drove through salt flats, sand dunes, and rocky terrain. We know the secret of keeping kids happy in national parks now, and stopped at the Visitors Center for a couple of Junior Ranger activity books. On the way out of Death Valley we drove through a wonderful grove of Joshua Trees.

We spent the night in Lake Isabella, probably the windiest place I have ever been. Most of the trees are bent over at a steep angle. A hot and unpleasant wind howled through the campsite all afternoon and night. Sam didn't care though - this campsite as a video game arcade and he got to be a motorcyclist, rally car driver, and snowboarder, and Hannah proved to be the family champion of that hockey shuffleboard game.

Never mind Lake Isabella, the Windy City. You're only a few miles from the little town of Lamont (make a left as you near Bakersfield - don't turn right or you'll end up in Shafter)
